Butyric acid (butyrate) is a short-chain fatty acid produced naturally in the colon when fibre-fermenting bacteria break down dietary fibre. It is also present in small amounts in butter, which gave the compound its name.

Tributyrin binds three butyric acid molecules to a glycerol backbone – the form butyrate takes in foods. That structure is stable enough for a softgel and releases its butyrate as the triglyceride is digested.
