Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form of hyaluronic acid. It binds water in the skin, which is why serums of this kind are applied to damp or freshly cleansed skin and then sealed in with a cream on top.

The order is cleanser, serum, cream. The serum is thinner than the cream and should therefore go underneath — the other way round works less well because the cream forms a barrier the serum cannot get through.
Hyaluronic acid binds moisture best when the skin is slightly damp. Apply it straight after cleansing, before the skin has dried completely.
