Product Details
Complete digestive enzyme complex from Designs for Health
Digestzymes™ combines 9 different digestive enzymes – including DPP IV peptidases for gluten and casein peptides, lactase for milk sugar and lipase for fat – with 200 mg of betaine HCl and ox bile. Taken at the start of a meal.
About digestive enzymes and betaine HCl
Digestion relies on an interplay between stomach acid, bile salts and enzymes that break proteins, fats and carbohydrates down into components small enough to be absorbed. Each enzyme class has its own substrate: proteases work on protein, lipase on fat, amylase and glucoamylase on starch, lactase on milk sugar. Digestzymes™ covers all four, and adds betaine HCl and ox bile – both long-standing components in functional medicine formulas.

DPP IV (dipeptidyl peptidase IV) is a specialised peptidase studied for its ability to break down gluteomorphin (from gluten) and casomorphin (from casein) – two peptides some people react sensitively to. Lactase helps break down milk sugar (lactose), which makes the product popular among people who feel uncomfortable after dairy products. The GastroENZ™ blend also contains proteases, amylase, glucoamylase, invertase and lipase for complete enzyme support.
Betaine HCl supplies hydrochloric acid, which contributes to the pH at which the enzyme pepsin becomes active. Ox bile supplies bile salts, the emulsifiers that make fat accessible to lipase. Designs for Health has formulated the product to be taken before the meal rather than after it, since the enzymes need to be present while the food is being broken down.

Who is Digestzymes™ for?
Digestzymes™ suits adults who want a broad enzyme complex covering protein, fat, starch and lactose in a single capsule, rather than separate lactase or lipase products. It is also chosen by people on a diet high in protein or fat, where the enzyme load per meal is greater. The product is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.
What is DPP IV and why is it included?
DPP IV (dipeptidyl peptidase IV) is a specific peptidase that breaks down the peptides gluteomorphin (from gluten) and casomorphin (from casein) – two peptides some people react sensitively to. That makes DPP IV particularly useful for people who want extra support with meals containing gluten or dairy. The product is not a replacement for medical treatment and is not intended for people with diagnosed coeliac disease who need a completely gluten-free diet.
When should I take Digestzymes™?
Digestzymes™ should be taken at the start of a meal – ideally with the first bite or immediately before. That ensures the enzymes are in place when the food reaches the stomach. Do not take the product on an empty stomach without first consulting a nutritional therapist or doctor.
How long does one jar last?
One jar contains 90 capsules. At one capsule per main meal (about 2–3 a day) it lasts about 1 month. If you only take it with your largest meal it lasts 3 months.
Is Digestzymes™ vegan?
No. Digestzymes™ contains ox bile and pepsin, both ingredients of animal origin. Vegetarians and vegans who want enzyme support should choose an entirely plant-based enzyme formula instead.
Where and how is Digestzymes™ made?
Digestzymes™ is made in the USA by Designs for Health in a facility following cGMP standards (current Good Manufacturing Practices) regulated by the FDA. The enzymes and raw materials undergo third-party testing for activity, identity and the absence of heavy metals.
Can I combine it with probiotics?
Yes, Digestzymes™ is often combined with probiotics and prebiotics within a complete digestive protocol. The enzymes help the body break food down while probiotics support the balance of the gut flora. Consult a doctor if you take medication affecting stomach acid (PPIs or H2 blockers) before using betaine HCl.

Digestzymes™ differs from most enzyme products in including DPP-IV, an enzyme that breaks down the peptides gluteomorphin and casomorphin from gluten and casein. The rest of the blend covers protein, fat, carbohydrate and lactose, with betaine HCl and ox bile.
